The Status Quo: A RSEQ Football Discussion

Well, we are at the point in the season when the Dunmore Cup has been awarded, and we are exactly where we predicted a few months ago. It was the ninth straight matchup between Laval and Montreal in the Dunsmore Cup.

The only expectation, Laval walked away with the thrilling win this season, (compared to Montreal winning last season). The Rouge et Or won on a last-second rouge, which begs the question, is it time for the Canadian football rules to be changed?

But, before we get too in-depth with that debate, I will punt that down the line for another day (pun intended).

In a season that saw some upsets within the RSEQ conference, and what seemed to be the start of a shift in the power balance, we found ourselves at the end of the season watching the same matchup as normal in the Dunsmore Cup finals, Laval v. Montreal. Which by no stretch of the imagination meant that it was a bad game. Quite the opposite in fact. The total offence for both teams were virtually the same, with Montreal achieving 374 total yards compared to Laval’s 304 yards.

Essentially, we had two heavy-weight fighters, both landing shots and going the distance with this matchup, until Laval came up with a clutch tackle inside the Montreal endzone off a missed field goal.

Regardless of the way in which they won, Laval was able to squeak out the win, which means they will be moving on to the Mitchell Bowl. They are only one game away from the Vanier Cup that will take place on November 26th, in London Ontario. The team standing in their way? The Western Mustangs.

The host team, Western, will be looking to add to their record fifteen appearances in the Vanier Cup, while Laval will be looking to add to their record number 10 Vanier Cup’s won.
